Andy Irons dies on way back from Puerto Rico

Holy shit this is sad and very hard to believe!  Rumors as of right now are he died of dengue fever, but details are still coming out.  Wow.  RIP Andy.

Sad news has made its way into the Surfer offices this afternoon as we’re hearing confirmed reports that 3X World Champion Andy Irons has passed away.

At this time the cause of death is unknown, although sources inside the family say that he passed away en route from Puerto Rico to his home in Hawaii. The 32 year-old-hawaiian was deemed too ill to travel on his connecting flight from Texas to Hawaii and was grounded there. Unconfirmed reports say that he passed away in his Dallas hotel room.

UPDATE:  Still no official word from anyone, but multiple sources are saying indeed it was dengue fever.  Sad day for the surf community, and vibes to his family and friends.

  2. In memory of Andy Irons. Just found your web page looking for regarding his death from dengue fever. I just think it’s scary to think that doctors haven’t found a cure for the fever–people either make it or they don’t.
